About Cranberry Bog Nature Preserve

Cranberry Bog Nature Preserve, located in Riverhead, New York, is a hidden gem nestled in the wetlands of Long Island’s East End. Spanning 165 acres, the preserve is the remains of an old cranberry-growing operation and now serves as a critical part of the Peconic River's drainage system and a natural reservoir for fresh water. The preserve’s unique landscape includes acidic marshes, bogs, and wetlands, creating the perfect habitat for a variety of plant and animal species.

Visitors to Cranberry Bog Nature Preserve can enjoy a 1.1-mile loop trail that winds around the scenic Sweezy Pond. The unmarked trail is accessible from a small parking lot on Lake Avenue, just south of Riverhead's traffic circle. The trail offers stunning views of the pond, diverse plant life, and sightings of local wildlife, including great blue herons, kingfishers, and various reptiles and amphibians. Birdwatchers will delight in the wide variety of bird species that frequent the area.
