About Patriots Preserve
Patriots Preserve in Shirley is a thoughtfully restored 100-acre park nestled on the Mastic Peninsula, where nature, history, and recreation come together. Once the site of the former Links Golf Course, this property has been reimagined as a scenic preserve, with Brookhaven Town transforming the landscape into a welcoming space for residents and visitors alike.
The preserve features two smooth, paved walking paths that loop gently through the park—ideal for strollers, bicycles, and casual walks with kids. While it’s a preserve and dogs are not permitted, the clean, quiet trails make it an excellent spot for peaceful outings and family strolls. Native trees such as pitch pines, oaks, and red maples line the paths, providing natural shade and offering glimpses of seasonal foliage throughout the year. You’ll also spot native grasses and wetland vegetation near the lower areas of the trail system, giving the park a varied natural feel.

At the heart of the preserve is a playground designed specifically for children ages 5–12, with modern equipment that encourages climbing, balancing, and open-ended play. However, families with toddlers should note that there are currently no play features suited for ages 2–5. Nearby picnic tables make it easy to settle in for a lunch break while the kids play.
The park officially opened in October, and while some features are still being finalized, a seasonal kayak launch and restroom facilities are already available. The launch area provides easy access to the local waterways, though availability may vary depending on the season.
The name “Patriots Preserve” pays homage to the region’s Revolutionary War ties. The nearby William Floyd Estate, home to one of the original signers of the Declaration of Independence, and historic St. George’s Manor underscore the area’s significance in American history. The preserve not only honors that legacy but ensures that this land remains a tranquil, public space for future generations.
