Bayard Cutting Arboretum

In late 1936, as she was considering transferring "Westbrook" to the Long Island State Park Commission, Olivia James wrote about the two purposes she and her mother envisioned for what is today known as Bayard Cutting Arboretum, named in honor of her father, William Bayard Cutting. The Vision of Olivia James: Oasis of Beauty and Quiet: Westbrook was to be a place of beauty and tranquility, providing pleasure, rest, and refreshment to those who appreciate outdoor beauty. Educational Influence: It was to foster a greater appreciation and understanding of informal planting among the general public and landscape professionals, influencing the preservation of our native landscape's amenities. Bayard Cutting Arboretum, spanning 691 picturesque acres along the Connetquot River, beautifully fulfills Ms. James' vision. The arboretum offers a serene environment for a leisurely walk among the trees of the pinetum or the vibrant rhododendrons. Most trees are labeled, helping visitors envision how they might look in their own landscapes. The Bayard Cutting Horticultural Club further enhances the educational experience with its programs. Visitors can enjoy a light lunch at the café on the first floor, overlooking the Connetquot River's great lawn. The mansion also hosts formal teas by reservation and features historical photo exhibits showcasing Westbrook's history as a renowned dairy farm. One of the original barns still stands in the farm area of the arboretum. Bayard Cutting Arboretum is a perfect place to relax, read a book, and experience the peace and serenity of estate living from the 1920s and '30s. Photography Permits: A permit is required for all posed photography at Bayard Cutting Arboretum, including wedding, family, and engagement photos.
