Connetquot River State Park Preserve

Connetquot River State Park Preserve is home to a rich diversity of wildlife and plant species. The preserve supports numerous game birds, fish, and animals, including deer, waterfowl, and rare nesting birds such as osprey. The park’s natural habitats include freshwater ponds, woodlands, and salt marshes, as well as rare plants like trailing arbutus and pink lady’s slipper. The park’s namesake, the Connetquot River, flows through its center, offering freshwater fishing opportunities by permit only.

Bird Species

The park is a haven for bird watchers, with a variety of bird species populating its ecosystems throughout the year. Notable species include:

Osprey (seen nesting in the park)

Waterfowl, including ducks and geese

Rare migratory birds during the spring and fall months

Songbirds that fill the forest trails

Visitors can also spot white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and other wildlife that make their home in the park's protected environments.

Trails and Activities

With 50 miles of trails, Connetquot River State Park Preserve provides plenty of opportunities for exploration. These trails are suitable for hiking, horseback riding, and in winter, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. The park’s trails wind through dense woodlands, alongside the river, and across meadows, offering scenic views and wildlife observation points.

One of the park’s major attractions is fly fishing on the Connetquot River, which is renowned for its trout. Fishing is permitted year-round, but only with a valid New York State freshwater fishing license and a park permit. Sessions are divided into morning, afternoon, and evening times, and reservations are required.

Historic and Cultural Significance

Connetquot River State Park Preserve was once the site of the South Side Sportsmen’s Club, a private 19th-century sporting club for New York’s elite. The park preserves this history through the South Side Sportsmen's Club Historic House Tours, where visitors can explore the Main House and learn about the club’s legacy and its influence on the park’s development.

The Long Island Environmental Interpretive Center, located within the park, offers educational programs for visitors of all ages. Schools, youth groups, and special interest organizations can arrange for guided hikes and activities. The center also provides Family Adventure Programs, Fun for Kids Activities, and Adult Ed-ventures that cover various environmental and wildlife topics.
